Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

Pupil Premium is an amount given by the government to schools to support children who have, or have had in the last 6 years, free school meals.

The Government believes that the Pupil Premium, which is additional to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’).

Schools also receive funding for children who have been looked after continuously for more than six months, and children of service personnel.

How much does the school receive?

The school receives funding for each pupil registered as eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last 6 years

  • £1,320 for pupils in reception to year 6

Schools will receive £2,300 for any pupil identified in the January school census or the alternative provision census as having left local authority care as a result of:

  • adoption
  • a special guardianship order
  • a child arrangements order (previously known as a residence order)
  • who has been in local authority care for 1 day or more recorded as both eligible for FSM in the last 6 years and as being looked after (or as having left local authority care).

How do I apply?

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to Universal Free School Meals. However this only entitles them to a free dinner each day, not additional pupil funding.

If you believe that your circumstances would entitle your child to Pupil Premium funding, which would mean that the school receives an additional £1,320 per year, please click the link below:

How do we use the Pupil Premium Funding?

The Government believes that head teachers and school leaders should decide how to best use the Pupil Premium funding as they know the needs of their children. Please find below our Pupil Premium Strategies and reviews.
